How often you get your gutters cleaned is purely a personal preference. We would usually recommend having them cleaned a couple of times a year in general but this can be impacted by a variety of environmental factors.
Today we’re going to look at the factors that influence how often you should clean your gutters.
How Often Should You Clean Your Gutters?
Living in the UK, we’re all pretty familiar with how bad the weather can be. And with the changing seasons on top of this, we’d generally recommend cleaning your gutters twice a year. Once in early Spring and once a week or so into Autumn.
Best Month to Clean Your Gutters
Following on from above, the best months to clean your gutters would be March and October. With thunderstorms more likely to occur in Spring and Summer, you’ll want to make sure your gutters are perfectly clean so as to handle large amounts of rainfall. Cleaning in October will give you an early chance to remove any leaves that have built up as trees shed their leaves in the Autumn.
Factors That Influence How Often You Should Clean Your Gutters
Moss and Algae Growth
If you live in an area where there’s a lack of sunlight it’s very likely that you’ll be contending with moss and algae growth all year round. Moss and algae if left uncleaned will wreak havoc on your guttering system and could lead to blockages as well as other issues. If this sounds like your home then cleaning your gutters 3 or 4 times a year would be ideal.
Rainfall
If you live in a city like Manchester where rainfall occurs more often, it’s likely that you’ll need to clean your gutters at least 3 times a year. With a constant source of running water your gutters will be more prone to the build up of silt which is carried and deposited as a sediment. Again, this can cause your guttering to be much less efficient.
How Well You Clean Your Gutters
Whilst this should go without saying, if you don’t do a good job when cleaning your gutters, chances are you’re going to need to clean them again sooner than you otherwise would.
Top tip: if you’re not hiring a professional, make sure you’ve got the best gutter cleaning tools to hand.
What happens if you don’t clean your gutters?
Avoiding cleaning your gutters can be more hassle than you think. By allowing debris to build up or unchecked moss growth, there’s a good chance your gutters will become blocked.
Blocked gutters can lead to some pretty rough problems including rainwater seeping into your home as well as the heavy weight of standing water being a strain on your gutter clips which will result in even more maintenance needed.
Unchecked moss growth can even displace roof tiles which will be expensive to repair.
